The Senate Democratic Caucus is the central support staff for all of Michigan’s Democratic State Senators. Interns will work with policy and communications staff to analyze legislation and create communications products to help further the message and agenda of Senate Democrats. Possible intern assignments include:

» Research background information for policy and communications staff;
» Assist with bill analyses;
» Write first drafts of press releases, newsletters, website text, and talking points
» Monitor media coverage;
» Monitor Senate session;
» Attend committee meetings and press conferences;
» Assist with events; and
» Administrative work including filing and answering phones.

Experience can be tailored to strengths and interests of individual interns. This is an unpaid position, but course credit may be available.
Qualifications: Undergraduate or graduate student with an interest in public policy, law, and communications.

Internships roughly match the college calendars. Opportunities are available for fall, spring, and summer.

Work schedule is flexible but the ability to work at least one entire 9-5 day is preferred. Carpooling may be available.

Internship Opportunity

Summary Position Description: State Senator Bert Johnson (D-Detroit) is seeking one or more energetic and dedicated interns for the Fall 2011 semester. Primary responsibilities would consist of general office duties, including answering phones, document and spreadsheet preparation, filing and other tasks as assigned. The position will also include assisting staff in the areas of legislation, communications, attending meetings, research, and constituent affairs. Students will gain valuable hands-on office experience in an active, legislative environment.

Qualifications: Related office experience and a High School Diploma are required. Excellent telephone, written communication skills, and a positive attitude preferred. Legislative experience and a basic understanding of computer office programs are helpful.

Status: This is an unpaid position. Hours are negotiable and school credit can be arranged.


This is an unpaid, non-civil service, at-will position.
