Voting Begins in the $10,000 #mi2020 Scholarship Competition

Lansing – Senate Democratic Leader Gretchen Whitmer announced today that voting has begun to choose the $10,000 winner of the #mi2020 Scholarship Competition. Since the competition's announcement, it has received an overwhelming response from high school seniors all across Michigan and the 55 semi-finalists are now available online at www.mi2020video.com.

“I am truly amazed by the quality of the entries that we received in the #mi2020 Scholarship Competition,” said Whitmer. “The students' talents and their belief in making higher education affordable have already made this competition an outstanding success.”

Participants were asked to submit a short web video that explains the importance of investing in higher education and how the Michigan 2020 Plan to offer free college tuition to all students is the right investment for our state to make. The winner of the competition will receive up to $10,000 for their first year's expenses at a public Michigan university or community college.

“The #mi2020 Scholarship Competition is designed to demonstrate the impact the Michigan 2020 program would have on a student's life by giving one high school senior a year's worth of free tuition right now while we continue to work towards enacting this critically important program for all Michigan students,” added Whitmer. “I encourage everyone to check out the outstanding entries we've received online and cast their vote for their favorite to help that student achieve their dream of a college education.”

The video entries are available online at www.mi2020video.com. The first round of voting will take place through Sunday, May 6, 2012, and the 10 finalists will be announced on or around May 11. The public is encouraged to vote either online or via phone or text message. Information on how to vote is available on the website.
