Whitmer Rips Republicans on Primary Failures

Lansing – Senate Democratic Leader Gretchen Whitmer blasted the Michigan Republican Party today for rewriting the rules of their presidential primary and making backroom deals to determine its outcome against the will of the voters.

“The Republican Party insisted on having taxpayers foot the bill for their $10 million primary, and when they didn't get the outcome they wanted, they further embarrassed themselves by ignoring the rules and giving Mitt Romney the delegates anyway,” said Whitmer. “If they are going to have such a blatant disregard for the democratic process, they could at least pay Michigan taxpayers back for the $10 million we were forced to spend for their bogus election.”

Whitmer noted that a number of Republican officials have started a petition called “Stop the GOP Corruption” to urge the Michigan Republican Party to rethink their mistake, showing that there is significant concern inside their own party as to the behavior of their leadership.

“It's not often I agree with former Attorney General Mike Cox, but when he called this stunt a ˜third world voting' trick, he was absolutely right,” added Whitmer. “I've seen some strange politics in my time in Lansing, but I think it's safe to say the Michigan Republican Party has reached a new low with this move today.”
