Whitmer to Snyder: Michigan Needs a Plan, not Promises

LANSING - Senate Democratic Leader Gretchen Whitmer responded to Governor Rick Snyder’s disappointing State of the State address by asking where the initiatives were that are going to get Michigan’s economy and our people back on track.

“I heard a lot of talk tonight about goals, but shockingly little about real plans to move Michigan forward,” said Whitmer. “The people of Michigan are expecting real solutions to very real problems, and other than blindly handing tax dollars over to corporate interests, he doesn’t seem to have any.”

Whitmer pointed out that Snyder failed to address the Michigan 2020 Plan, the program introduced by the Senate Democrats that has received praise from education and business leaders from across the state. The Michigan 2020 Plan would provide Michigan high school graduates- public, private or home-schooled-with the opportunity to have the cost of their college education paid for in its entirety.

“It’s curious that the Governor would ignore the one plan on the table that says Michigan believes in its future by creating the most educated and highly skilled workforce anywhere in the nation,” added Whitmer. “It’s simple, it’s effective and it will work, but only if the Governor is willing to stand with us and take the bold action necessary to get Michigan and our people back on track.”
